August 6, 2026 Camposantos La Piedad
The death certificate is an essential legal document that officially certifies a person’s passing. It is usually easy to process, yet many people are unsure where to obtain it, what it is used for or who can request it. This guide explains everything you need to know about the death certificate in Costa Rica, step by step.
Important: La Piedad does not issue death certificates, but we can guide you through the procedures and documents required before funeral or cremation services.
What is a death certificate?
The death certificate is an official document issued by the Costa Rica Civil Registry that confirms a person’s passing. It includes information such as:
Full name of the deceased.
Place, time and date of death.
Age, occupation and marital status.
Details from the medical death certificate.
This document is indispensable for the legal and administrative procedures that follow a loss.
What is a death certificate for?
The death certificate serves several legal and social purposes. The most common are:
Processing life insurance or compensation claims.
Requesting funeral or cremation services.
Managing inheritances and pensions.
Closing bank accounts or cards.
Contributing to national mortality statistics that support public health programs.
Who issues the death certificate?
In Costa Rica, the Civil Registry is responsible for issuing this official document. If the passing occurs abroad, the process is handled through the corresponding Costa Rican Consulate, with later legalization by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship.
If the document is in another language, an official certified translation must be provided.
Internationally, death certificates are usually issued by each country’s Civil Registries, State Departments or Ministries of Justice. In every case the document must carry legal validity and authentication to be recognized abroad, especially for repatriation, inheritances or international insurance.
What is needed to request a death certificate?
For the in-person procedure in Costa Rica, present the following documents:
Medical death certificate.
Birth certificate of the deceased.
Identity card of the deceased.
Identity document of the person making the request.
The process is straightforward and can be done at the nearest Civil Registry office.
In other countries requirements vary, but the following are generally requested:
Medical or hospital certificate, issued by an authorized professional.
National identity document or passport.
In some cases, proof of kinship or a power of attorney.
When requested from abroad, it can be arranged through the consulates or embassies of the country of origin, or through official digital portals, always verifying that the document carries a recognized digital signature or electronic seal.
Who can request a death certificate?
This document can be requested by:
Relatives up to the first degree of affinity or the third degree of consanguinity.
There are three ways to process the certificate, depending on the applicant’s convenience:
1. In person
Go to the Civil Registry with the documents mentioned above. This is the most common and fastest method.
2. By mail
Send a letter with the deceased’s information and the mailing address where you wish to receive the physical document.
3. Online
The Civil Registry allows the procedure to be done digitally:
Go to its official website.
Fill in the details of the deceased and the applicant.
Make the corresponding payment.
You will receive the certificate by email or postal mail.
What are certified copies of the death certificate?
Certified copies are official duplicates with the same legal validity as the original. To request them, send a letter explaining the reasons and meet the same requirements as the initial procedure.
Why the death certificate matters
Beyond its legal value, the death certificate helps protect the identity of the deceased, prevent fraud, carry out financial procedures and coordinate funeral arrangements. It also makes it easier to plan services such as burial or cremation, and obtaining it early reduces delays during difficult moments.
